BORDERING OUR LANDS

LAYALE CHAKER

Borderlands around the world seem to share different challenges, and coping with the divide along religious, political, socio-economic, and ethnic lines seems increasingly difficult in our world today. It is where education in arts can hope to bring a little of relief and opportunities to foster co-existence and unity through equal access to quality educational programs for children, youth, and women in the marginalized communities.

In an effort of using creative leadership in social settings and as a potential tool of knowledge for a better understanding of peoples’ subjectivities, personalities and trajectories, Layale Chaker and her quintet Sarafand present their work for children and youth living in borderland regions and conflict regions in different parts of the world. Musical education, whether through a workshop or a performance, will be used as a tool of transmission of oral and intangible heritage, and a medium of empowerment and self-expression.
