THROUGH THE WALLS
SHAW PONG LIU
“Through the Walls” is an expansion of violinist and composer Shaw Pong Liu’s long-running Code Listen project, building on her relationships with homicide survivors and her work with restorative justice and music for healing and dialogue.
Every human being needs hope and purpose, no matter what mistakes or missteps they’ve made. Liu has witnessed the power of restorative justice circles to build intimacy and truth-telling, and be transformative spaces of healing for participants, especially when led by mothers surviving homicide who, despite their perpetual grief of losing a child to violence, have found strength to offer hope and healing to others.
In “Through the Walls,” Liu will collaborate with homicide survivor organization Legacy Lives On and Silkroad colleagues Kevork Mourad (visual art), Kinan Azmeh (clarinet), and Mike Block (cello) in a 2-visit residency at a Massachusetts state prison. The artists will witness and listen deeply to restorative justice circles led by mothers who have lost sons to homicide connecting with inmates who’ve been convicted of violent crime, and co-create a responsive/reflective piece of music/performance.
The artists will strive to create a participatory work that communicates the intimacy and healing power of restorative justice and deep listening that can be shared with collaborators at the prison, local communities, and globally with Silkroad audiences.
